On a geologic level, Earth experiences over 11,000 earthquakes each year. On any given day, 70 to 80 volcanoes are active worldwide. On a human-made level, more than 430 nuclear plants are operating, with additional facilities coming online regularly. Together, these plants produce some 200,000 metric tons of toxic waste annually, including 10,000 tons of highly radioactive material.
